Bicycling on the Big Island of HawaiiBiking on Hawaii is a true adventure! The Big Island’s wide-open spaces and challenging landscape really lends itself to some of the best biking (trail rides, mountain biking and road trips) in all of the Hawaiian Islands.

Your Hawaii biking options are extremely varied and can accommodate the most experienced to the least experienced rider. Samplings of bike tours in Hawaii are as follows:

How about coasting down 3500 feet from the heart of the Kohala Mountains? This ride is rated at a difficulty level of beginner to intermediate.

If you are physically fit, there is an advanced Hawaii biking tour that takes you over the ups and downs of the Kohala Range

If you wish to experience waterfalls on your biking Hawaii adventure, one bicycle tour takes you over bridges and old roadways to the Waipio Valley along the Hamakua Coastline. You can arrange this bicycle tour in a number of ways to accommodate your experience and fitness level.

Hawaii Bicycling Van Another Hawaii biking tour starts at a coffee farm and ends at the Place of Refuge. Along the way you will visit the historic Painted Church in the South Kona region and Kealakekua Bay (where Captain Cook died).

If you are an accomplished rider, there are tours that pass all five volcanoes of the Big Island within a six-day time period. Luggage support is provided. A portion of this trip is on the roadway of the famous Iron Man Triathlon.

If you like to get off the road entirely, there are tours that go down cattle trails to the beautiful Upcountry ranch lands.

Several local organizations actively maintain and designate trails, and host weekly rates, including:

Big Island Mountain Bike Association (BIMBA). BIMBA is a voluntary organization whose membership is made up of riders, friends, and family who are interested in mountain biking in Hawaii. BIMBA has ongoing activities such as fun rides, races and trail maintenance as well as participation in related community activities. They provide important safety information and maps of trails.

Peoples Advocacy for Trails Hawaii (PATH) turns 25 years old in 2011. PATH promotes traffic safety education and improves conditions on roadways and trails for recreation, fitness, and alternative modes of transportation. They also provide a Biking Hawaii Guide that includes several Big Island maps.

On the Big Island, which is big on space and low on people, the county has designated a number of areas that bikers can use and has funded the publication of a mountain-biking trail map.

You can rent bicycles at several places on the Big Island including Hawaiian Pedals (Kona Inn Shopping Village) for about $20 a day and rugged mountain bikes at Bike Works (74-5583 Luhia Street) for about $25 a day.
