Hundreds of Hawaii bed and breakfasts are scattered around the Hawaiian Islands. Some are modest spare bedrooms in family households, others are romantic and private hideaways, and a few are full-fledged inns.

Hawaii bed and breakfasts vary greatly, but if you are looking for a friendly and comfortable environment, for the most part they offer some of the very best lodging bargains in Hawaii.

There are three styles of bed & breakfasts, ranging from $65.00 to $300.00 per night; all have a three-night minimum, so in planning your trip, be sure to give each host home or island at least three nights.

IN HOUSE STAY: A room in a private home, with a nice island-style continental breakfast served. The average price throughout all the islands is between $65.00 and $75.00 per night for two people.

STUDIO: Many hosts have converted a section of their homes into a studio apartment. These studios have private entrances, private baths, and tea kitchens (not full kitchens – usually a small refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker etc.). The studios average between $75.00 and $85.00 per night for two people.

OHANA: A cottage that is separate and apart from the main house but on the grounds where the main house exists. The Ohana can house families, or more than one couple traveling together; however, anyone is welcome to stay in an Ohana. The average price for an Ohana cottage is between $85.00 and $95.00 per night for the first two people and additional people are charged accordingly.

Due to Hawaii state codes that place restrictions on serving home-cooked meals, many Hawaii bed and breakfasts offer a continental breakfast or provide food for guests to cook their own meals. Some places do provide home-cooked breakfasts but do not advertise it.

Keep in mind that bed and breakfasts are small scale — most have only a few guest rooms. Out of consideration for their neighbors and guest, the B&B hosts, who are often not home during the day, discourage unannounced drop-ins.

The advantages of a traditional Hawaii bed and breakfast are:

  • individual style and congenial atmosphere
  • great place to meet other visitors to Hawaii
  • host is generally happy to act as your own private concierge, giving you tips on
  • where to go and what to do
  • affordable (though fancier ones can run $150 or more)

The disadvantages are:

  • lack of privacy
  • usually a set time for breakfast
  • few amenities
  • generally no maid service
  • you have to share the quarters beyond your bedroom with others

In Hawaii, it is traditional and customary to remove your shoes before entering anyone’s home. The same is true for most bed and breakfasts. Most hosts post signs or will politely ask you to remove your shoes before entering the B&B. Not only does this keep the B&B clean, but you’ll be amazed how relaxed you feel walking around barefoot. If this custom is unpleasant to you, a B&B may not be for you. Consider a condo or hotel, where no one will be particular about your shoes.

Hotels, resorts, condos, and vacation rentals generally allow smoking in the guest rooms (most also have non-smoking rooms available), but the majority of bed-and-breakfast units forbid smoking in the rooms.
